"Having traveled to Rome and Paris I returned with a unique aesthetic, balancing the inner spirit and the material world. Reworking the ideology of mythological imagery, busts, religious figures, icons, abstracts, nudes, the celestial, and the power of landscape, I seek to uncover a common denominator in our civilization. The techniques employed include subtractive effects, layering, washes, varnishes, and glazes, bringing forth dreamlike visions. I paint many different genres. From landscapes, to abstracts, nudes, portraits, still life, to full scale commissioned murals. My paintings attempt to explore voyages through epiphany and fantasy.

The sepia toned oil paintings incorporate the pigment burnt umber. The decision to work on a monochromatic series has been very liberating. An image reveals itself without the luxury of a full palette. The pigment burnt umber recalls the hue attained from the ruins of Pompeii to Renaissance drawings. These sepia works regenerate themselves, evolve and fade into mysterious imagery. The burnt umber applied with washes of turpentine reveal drippings, and cracks to uncover a process of decay. The drawings are given strength and permanence in the medium of oil, yet they retain the fragility of the dust they come.

My work stems predominantly from dreams that are orchestrated and filtered through the vehicle of pigment, achieving perspectives with light and atmosphere. I consider art an evolving process and feel my art comes from an exterior muse that enters and inspires." Susan is an Art and Humanities professor since 2005 teaching Art History, History of Performing Arts, and studio art classes.  Susan Anne Russell's art is published internationally in books featuring artists, in poetry books and textbooks. Susan has been recognized for her televised interviews, work in film and her live performances.
